Blueberry Music Festival - Liam Purcell and Cane Mill Road

Twining innovation and tradition with instrumental excellence and youthful vigor, Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road are certain to excite.

In his early twenties, North Carolina’s Liam Purcell has established himself as a shining light within American Stringband music. Growing up less than a mile from legendary guitarist Doc Watson, Purcell was steeped in Appalachian old-time and bluegrass traditions from an early age.

Entering the professional bluegrass world during his teenage years, Purcell formed stringband-supergroup Cane Mill Road. He has appeared on the Billboard Bluegrass chart and was recognized by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2019 as the recipient of the “Momentum Band of the Year Award.”

Recording their latest album Yellow Line, Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road explored the creative aspects of writing and arranging. Purcell accepts the responsibility of carrying on a living tradition, realizing that his idols and especially Doc Watson never worried about boundaries between genre, style, or influence. Purcell states, “While I care deeply about honouring the Appalachian Stringband music I love, I also have my own songs inside, my own feelings to express, and my own innovations to contribute.”
